What a market assessment should actually tell you

August 26, 2026 ยท 7 min read ยท Meridian Trace

Most market assessments a device manufacturer receives are the same document with the country name changed. Market size, CAGR, a regulatory overview reproduced from the authority's own site, a list of the multinationals present, and a recommendation that could be applied to almost anywhere.

None of that is wrong. Very little of it changes what you do on Monday.

The questions a useful assessment answers

Who specifically competes with this product here? Not "the market is served by leading global players" โ€” the actual companies holding registrations in your device category, including the local manufacturers nobody in a Western office has heard of. In some markets those are the majority of the field. In China, 88% of registered manufacturers appear in no other market; an assessment listing only familiar names has described a tenth of the competition.

How concentrated is it? Ten companies holding most of a category is a defended position. A thousand companies holding a slice each is a price war. These call for opposite strategies, and market size cannot distinguish them.

Who could hold our registration, and what else do they carry? In most markets your access is legally attached to a local entity. A candidate list, with what each already distributes, is worth more than any growth projection.

What does our existing approval buy us? Whether this market will shorten its review because of work we have already done โ€” and what our device's class is here, since that is what the answer keys off.

How does anyone get paid? Reimbursement listing, public tender, or private purchase. If nobody has established which applies to this category, the assessment has not reached the part that determines revenue.

What would make this a bad idea? An assessment with no disconfirming evidence in it was not an assessment. It was a proposal.

How to tell before you commission it

Ask what the evidence base is. If the answer is industry reports and interviews, you will get a plausible narrative. If it includes the actual registration record โ€” who holds what, in your category, in that market, right now โ€” you will get something you can act on.

Ask whether local competitors will be named. If the deliverable will only cover companies with international footprints, you already know where its blind spot is.

Ask what would change the recommendation. Someone who can answer that has genuinely weighed it.

Where we sit

We are the data layer underneath this. Our customers run these assessments themselves โ€” the regional assessments on this site are built the same way, and the platform is where you answer the specific version for your own products.

Where a market genuinely needs someone on the ground โ€” and North America, Europe and Africa often do for reasons that have nothing to do with data โ€” we work with consultants in those regions and will make an introduction. No fee and no arrangement on our side. If the binding constraint is judgement rather than information, buy the judgement.
